The majority of the works are unpublished, and those which are published present considerable divergences. All the plays were written for the stage, and in some cases the names of the actors appear in the list of dramatis personae. Adv.MS.5.1.16, (i) and (ii) seem to be unconnected with the remainder of the collection.

Scope and Contents

Warren Hastings Anderson entered the merchant house of his uncle, Robert Anderson and Company, St. Andrew's Square, Edinburgh, in 1813, becoming a partner in 1818. From then until the 1850s he spent most of his life in Italy and France engaged in trade, finally retiring to Bowerhouse near Dunbar. Family, personal and legal material predominates in this collection.

Scope and Contents A E Borthwick (1871-1955), a son of William H Borthwick of Crookston, studied art in Edinburgh and Paris from 1890 to 1896, after which he enlisted in the ranks and helped to raise the Scottish Sharpshooters, 70th company of the XVIII Battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry. He served in the Boer and First World Wars, retiring from the army in 1919 as honorary Staff Captain. Scope and Contents

The bulk of the papers in this collection relate to the Canadian National Arctic Expedition, 1913-1918, and the part played in it by William McKinlay and the expedition leader, Vilhjalmur Stefansson. McKinlay's account of his experiences, especially those of being shipwrecked and marooned on Wrangel Island, off the coast of Siberia, were published by him in 'Karluk: the great untold story of Arctic expedition'.

Scope and Contents

James Halkett was Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Mauritius, Sir William Gomm, from 1842 to 1847, and to the Commander-in-Chief of India from 1850 to 1854. He was severely wounded in action in November 1854 and the diary for that year gives particular accounts of the battles he witnessed during the Crimean War.

Scope and Contents

The diary commences in February 1875 and breaks off in July 1876, fourteen months before the writer left Fiji. The material in the diary is basically similar to that of Miss Gordon-Cumming's book, ‘At home in Fiji’ (Edinburgh, 1881), as far as volume ii, page 25, although the book is composed of a series of letters to the writer's friends in England. Occasional thumb-nail sketches or diagrams appear in the diary.

Scope and Contents The journal is made up from transcripts of letters to his mother written on the journey between 26 August and 8 September 1842. Among the main places visited are Glasgow, Inveraray, Oban, Glencoe, Callander and Edinburgh. The text is ornamented with thirty-three engraved views, several dried plant specimens, and a few pencil sketches. Scope and Contents

The author was one of a party who made a tour of inspection of Gottland in connection with a scheme, promoted by Robert Chambers, the publisher, to settle British farmers there. Their report was entirely adverse. The volume includes a printed prospectus of the scheme, relevant newspaper articles, and correspondence with Chambers, 1850, and is illustrated with several water-colour sketches.
